Origin of the Greenville Health Authority
Act 432 granted authority and funding for Greenville General Hospital to deliver health care-related services countywide, setting the stage for the facility to expand and become a health organization with multiple campuses. This act broadened the hospital’s scope to become “an institution with an independent board of trustees, free from the control of either city or county authorities, which would be charged with the duty of operating the hospital and its expanded facilities for the benefit of the taxpayers and residents of all Greenville County.”
In 2016, the organization (then called Greenville Health System) determined it could better provide for the needs of the community and fulfill its statutory obligations by contracting with a newly formed, private not-for-profit entity. This entity, Prisma Health–Upstate, leased the assets and assumed substantially all obligations of Greenville Health System, including the right to conduct business under that system’s name. Therefore, the name of the governmental entity that formerly owned Greenville Health System was officially changed in 2018 to Greenville Health Authority (GHA).

Call for Board of Trustees Applications
Applications are now being accepted for four (4) open positions on the Board of Trustees.
The available positions are:
• Two (2) At-Large Trustee Positions – Greenville County
• One (1) At-Large Trustee Position – City of Greenville
• One (1) At-Large Trustee Position – Pickens County
Serving on the Board of Trustees is an opportunity to provide leadership, help guide the organization’s mission, and make a meaningful impact in the communities we serve.
Interested individuals are encouraged to complete the application by August 27, 2026, and hand deliver to: Greenville Health Authority, Attn: Phillip Liston, c/o Community Foundation of Greenville, 10 South Academy Street, Suite 350.
Board of Trustees
The Greenville Health Authority (GHA) Board of Trustees are responsible for overseeing the lease agreement between the Greenville Health Authority Board of Trustees and Prisma Health–Upstate Board of Directors, assessing community need, and administering the Healthy Greenville and Healthy Greenville, Too! grant initiatives to improve the health of the Upstate community.

A Note From Our President
It is my honor to serve as the President of the Greenville Health Authority. Our organization is proud of our role in awarding approximately $4 million dollars each year to selected nonprofits that serve to better the health outcomes of many of our residents of Greenville County. Our grant committee works on a rigorous process throughout the year in an attempt to recommend outstanding grant proposals for our full Board of Trustees to formally award!
In addition, our organization maintains an oversight role in the process of assuring the terms of our lease and contribution with Prisma Health are adhered to on an ongoing basis.
Part of that oversight includes a Report to the Community provided by Prisma Health Upstate in February of each calendar year.
It is my mission to assure that the tasks and responsibilities of the Greenville Health Authority are fulfilled to the highest detail possible on a daily basis!
I look forward to the continued success of our organization, as we work together with Prisma Health and all of our nonprofit partners to the benefit of all of our citizens.
