2025 Healthy Greenville Grant
The Greenville Health Authority (GHA) awarded Meals on Wheels of Greenville (MOW) a $500,000 Healthy Greenville Grant to support the construction of a new facility and expand services to meet the growing needs of homebound individuals and seniors in Greenville County. The new facility officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on March 5.
The grant has strengthened MOW’s ability to address food insecurity and limited access to nutritious food among Greenville County’s homebound population. As a nutrition provider serving some of the community’s most vulnerable residents, MOW helps ensure that individuals who are unable to meet this most basic need—food—have access to nutritious meals, meaningful personal interaction, and the support they need to remain independent.
Through its mission to enhance the quality of life of homebound individuals and seniors, Meals on Wheels of Greenville provides nutritious meals and personal connection while promoting health, dignity, and independence. MOW services are available without income restrictions, recognizing that food insecurity and the need for support can affect individuals facing a variety of circumstances, including aging, disability, injury, or other challenges beyond their control. For some clients, services are needed only temporarily; for others, ongoing support is essential.
The need for these services is significant. Food-insecure seniors are 60% more likely to experience congestive heart failure or a heart attack and are three times more likely to experience depression. By providing consistent access to nutritious meals and personal interaction, Meals on Wheels programs can help seniors remain healthy and independent in their own homes—the place where most want to remain.
Beyond improving quality of life, Meals on Wheels also provides a meaningful economic benefit. By helping older adults maintain their health and independence at home, these programs can reduce reliance on more costly healthcare and institutional alternatives, generating significant savings to taxpayers nationally.
The support from the Healthy Greenville Grant represents an important investment in the health, independence, and well-being of Greenville County’s homebound residents and enables Meals on Wheels of Greenville to serve more individuals who depend on these vital services.
